Heidi Lambert McClure Sassafras Hill Studio

First, tell us a little about yourself?

My name Is Heidi, I just turned 55 years old. I live in the beautiful mountains of western Pennsylvania with my husband Jerry and our odd assortment of rescue pets.  We live in the woods in a Log home that we built by hand back in 1997-1999.

What type of business or Nonprofit do you own or work for?

I own The Sassafras Hill Studio https://www.facebook.com/SassafrasHillStudio                                                  This is where I create everything!                                                                                                                                I am not the type of person who can do the same thing day in and day out.                                                    This is a brief description of what I make here:

All occasion greeting cards. Handmade greeting cards, stamped and embossed with coordinating layered paper, ribbons, buttons or die cuts for every occasion under the sun. Some are blank inside; some have greetings inside. These cards are listed and ready to purchase or can be made to order.

Candles and melts. I have a great line of scented candles in various sizes, colors and scents for all seasons. I also have scented wax melts in variety of sizes, colors and scents for those who prefer to melt instead of burning candles.

Handmade soap. I make hot process and cold process soap here in my studio too! I love making soap from scratch. My specialty is using fresh plants and flowers infused in oils as one of my main ingredients. Dandelion Flowers. Dandelion greens, Jewelweed, Honeysuckle Flowers, Violets, Violet Greens. This really enhances the soap naturally with no chemical fragrance added. The finished bars are Beautiful!

Everyday jewelry. I could sit and make everyday jewelry for hours on end. While I am making one piece an idea comes to mind for another one. I have been doing this for at least 35 years and the colors just blend themselves naturally for me My mood for the day will decide if I want to work on some simple stringing projects & earrings or an intricate woven project that requires counting and concentration. Somedays my head is in the clouds so simple it must be!

Bead embroidery. When I am working on bead embroidery I am in a “bead zone” This is by far my favorite thing to do in my studio. This form of bead work is also known as encrusted bead work. I make art, jewelry & specialty items with these combined techniques.

What brought you into this type of work? .

I have always done this type of work but now it is my job. I am no longer able to work so this is what I do for my income and for my sanity.   In 2007 I was diagnosed with 2 types of cancer. Since then my life & health have never been the same

What is your favorite part of the work that you do?

The creative part of my work is what I enjoy the most. It keeps me centered and helps me to focus on what is important in life.

What is the least favorite part of the work that you do?

Marketing myself. Trying to find outlets online and in the local community so that my work can be seen by more than just my family and friends.

What are your personal strengths and how do they assist you in the work you do?

I never quit. I may get stuck in a rut from time to time but I continue to come to my studio and work until I get the job done.

What are your personal weaknesses and how do they hinder you in your work?

My health issues are my weakness. I am often kept out of my studio for 2 or 3 days at a time with migraine clusters and severe body pain that keep my down.

How are you working to improve them so you can lessen their hindrance to your work?

While I lie in wait for these days to pass, I dream of what I will do when I get back to my studio.

What is your dream for the future?

My dream is to see The Sassafras Hill Studio grow as a business.

How does that relate to your work?

As my business grows, I will learn to work and grow with it.

What is your preferred way of communicating?

How can someone get in touch with you if they should wish to buy from or work with you in some way?

Through my Facebook page messenger https://www.facebook.com/SassafrasHillStudio

Is there anything about you or your business I’ve not covered here? If so, please write about that below.

South of the border: A bead encrusted breast plate Talisman Necklace. The centerpiece for this Talisman is a slab of raw peridot that has been captured with layers of shades of green glass beads. The surrounding surface has been covered with a blend of red Mexican jasper & olive jade. There are large olive jade & medium Harmony jasper focal points at each top peak and a beautiful matching glass mix fringe along the bottom. As I left the breast plate I followed with olive jade and red Mexican jasper stones and then connected the gemstone strand into a lightweight aluminum chain for a comfortable fit. This is a real head turner!!
