TIPS FROM TELL-IT-TO-THE-WORLD MARKETING: Guidelines Follow and Succeed Ignore and fail

Good morning campbellsworld visitors and writers one and all.

Here at Tell-It-To-The-World Marketing, where we support talented authors, as well as successful business owners in their marketing, by marrying social media, with more traditional approaches,

the goal is to help the client market their Book, Blog, or Business to the very best of their ability.

One of the best ways for me to do this, is to share tips with my clients, so that they can define the services I provide them, to better meet their needs.

This morning I’m going to write about guidelines and why it is so important that you as writers read and obey them when submitting your work.

Whether you’re submitting something to someone like me, who is your promotions assistant, to a magazine in hopes of selling a piece of your work, or to enter a contest, reading mindfully the guidelines set before you is one of the most important details you must never overlook.

What happens when you submit something without reading the guidelines?

First, you give the appearance of someone who is not willing or able to follow instructions.

Next, you’ve wasted not only your own time and hard work, but you’ve wasted the time of the person you’ve submitted to.

This kind of thing makes you look incompetent as a writer, and if someone such as me who is trying to assist with your promotion sends something off on your behalf without double checking your work, you’ve made them appear likewise.

This morning I’ve had to sit and read through and reject four pieces from persons who I know to be very talented writers. This took nearly two-hours of my time, and also caused me to send out one piece to someone else, and have it rejected because I assumed all be it wrongly that the one I was submitting on the behalf of had taken the time to read the guidelines sent to them before submitting.

There are reasons for guidelines, and whether you agree with those guidelines or no is not relevant. If you choose to submit a piece of your work for any reason you are agreeing to the guidelines set before you and so you must take the time to read and follow those guidelines to the letter.

Many people ask me why they’re not more successful in their work. Time and time again I must reply that it is due to their lack of attention to detail.

In closing let me just say, if you take the time to read the guidelines made available to you before submitting your work, you’ll go a lot farther in your writing career.

This post is not meant to be critical or harsh, it simply is as it is.

This morning while having email conversation with multi-genre author, client, and friend, Phyllis Staton Campbell she told me of how she spent several hours of her day yesterday planning for writing projects she’s not even close to finishing. Why? Because she wants to be certain she has her ducks lined neatly in a row before she spends the effort, time, and money that publishing said work will take.

Anyone can sit down at their computer, open a document, write a book, send it off to an editor, pay tons of money getting it worked up and even published, but few will succeed in selling that work once it’s out.

The biggest reason for failure, is due to not enough attention to detail. Writing the book, or article is only one tiny fragment of the pie. You must, once it is finished be willing to put forth a lot more work to get it into the hands of your desired reading audience.

This means that paying attention to details such as all guidelines is a must do at all times.

When I first began with all this, I too payed very little attention to guidelines, then the rejections began rolling in and with each one came the remark, “Pay more attention to the guidelines.”

Soon, I learned, and while I still get enough rejection slips each month to line a good-sized floor, they no longer include the words, “Pay more attention to the guidelines.”

Writers, do yourselves a favor, be mindful when submitting. I promise in the long run you won’t regret it.

Well, at least I’m never board.

      And.

I got a blog post out of it.

      LOL.

I have gotten some great writing work done today too and that is the greatest part of the day.

Still waiting on a piece of info I need for the Writer’s Grapevine but it’s my fault that I don’t have it, it is a holiday so I’m not sweating it.

      Just went onto something else.
