AUTHORS, THEY’RE ONLY HUMAN: Questions of a Haunted Mind

Good afternoon campbellsworld visitors.
This afternoon in my Authors, They’re Only Human column I want to talk to you about something that has weighed a bit on my heart and mind over these past few days.

Now, I’m working on banishing the ghosts in my life. Putting forth a lot of effort to move forward from the hurtful past I’ve experienced.

But.

I have a long way to go.

I get very upset when people say to me…
“You just need to get over it.”

Getting over things works differently for different people. I’m not going to write a post making excuses as to why I’ve done the things I’ve done. I’ve done and redone that.

I’m not going to go on and on about questions I’d like to ask and have answered. That, I’ve done aplenty of too.

Today I want to answer a question that was listed in an interview question list that for various reasons the blogger did not wish for me to talk about.

Well, that’s fine. They have the right to talk about what they want on their blogs.

Although, I might suggest to you bloggers doing interviews, if there are certain subjects you wish people to not write about that trigger or give you discomfort you should really say that somewhere in your interview process.

Why do I feel this question was very good and much worth answering?
Because it gave me an opportunity to express my thoughts and feelings in what I considered to be a safe environment.

Anyhow, here is a question I felt was great that I’ve decided to answer here on my own blog. I’m not only using the answer I gave in the original interview done with me but I’m going to expand upon it a bit.

Knowing now, what you didn’t know then what would you have done differently?

Knowing all I know now, since October of 2011, a time written of in my book Campbell’s Rambles: How a Seeing Eye Dog Retrieved My Life if I could have just one do-over and that do-over would not wreck everything else good that has happened for me and all concerned since I would have accepted that dinner invitation Drew Gibbon my Seeing Eye instructor extended to me when he was visiting me a few months after I brought my Campbell home.

I was living a double life then. My Now EX was abusing me, he’d been charged with sex-crimes and I was hiding all that, I was afraid to say yes to the invite for fear of what Donnie my EX might do to me if I went with my instructor to dinner, so I lied to Drew and told him we wanted him to have dinner with us.
Then I talked my EX into it.

Since that time so many horrifically horrible things have happened due to that first lie. There is no way to go back and fix not one of them and I cannot help believing that had I accepted that dinner invite I’d have found the courage to tell Drew all that was happening and none of the horrible things I’ve done since would have ever happened.

It haunts me each day of my life.
There have been good things that have come from that time though and they are not replaceable. I would not want those to go away.

I have learned things about myself and my mental illness I did not know and might not have ever learned had all that has transpired not taken place.
I have grown stronger, become more able to live on my own and in many ways, I am much healthier than ever before in my life.

But.

I simply cannot ever get out of my mind, what if?

I ask myself regularly…

“What if I’d taken him up on his dinner invitation and found the courage to tell all of what was happening in my life?

What if I’d told him I feared Donnie’s wrath should I accept his invite, and gone somewhere during the day while Donnie was gone and talked it all out with him?

Would things have been different for me? Would I have found the courage with Drew’s help to leave Donnie and had I done so would I have learned all I have learned of myself and maybe not have created such destruction?

Would I have changed the ways in which I was living my life and not lost my grandchildren and daughter?

Maybe I wouldn’t have reacted as I did to the stresses in my life and wouldn’t have fallen into dissociative behavior?

Would I have maybe left this area and gone onto do other things than what I have done?

Those questions all roll round in my mind and I will never know the answers to them because unlike in a fantasy novel we do not get do overs. We cannot go back and change anything we’ve previously done. All we can do is go forward in our lives no matter what our past has been and do the best we can with what we have now and what lies ahead.

One thing I urge all to remember. Be careful when you make the decision to protect another thus leaving yourself unprotected because in the end those you’re protecting may not be there to protect you.

Author Bio
Patty Lyne Fletcher in her own words (October 2017
About me and my crew
I’m a single mother with a beautiful daughter, of whom I am very proud. I have a great son-in-law and five beautiful grandchildren. Three girls, and two boys. I hope to be able to write more about them later on. I own and handle a Black Labrador from The Seeing Eye™ named Campbell Lee—a.k.a. Bubba Lee or King Campbell, to give just a couple of his nicknames.
About my blindness
I was born one and a half months premature. My blindness was caused by my being given too much oxygen in the incubator. I was partially sighted until 1991, at which time I lost my sight due to an infection after cataract surgery and high eye pressure. I used a cane for 31 years before making the change to a guide dog.
Where I live and work
Currently, I live and work in Kingsport, Tenn. I used to work for CONTACT-CONCERN of Northeast Tennessee, Inc. I left that position in order to spend time with family and pursue my writing full time.
Why I write.
I wrote Campbell’s Rambles: How a Seeing Eye Dog Retrieved My Life to tell the story of how going to The Seeing Eye™ and getting Campbell, learning to love, handle, and work him, then coming home and adding him to my life, gave me true freedom. I tell of how changing from being a 31-year cane user to being a guide dog handler taught me things about myself I had never known before. I tell of the wonderment I experienced when I finally took that chance.
A major goal of mine is to help others who find themselves in domestic violence situations. I also want to help others learn more about mental illnesses and how different situations and environments can drastically affect those with such challenges. I tell how training affected me physically as a result of the fibromyalgia I deal with, along with the side effects of the medications I take. I focus on bipolar disorder, on how it can go horribly wrong and cause a person to behave in ways they normally would not.
Another thing I have attempted to show is how, in certain institutional settings, attachments can develop—and how those attachments can become unhealthy for all concerned if they are not handled correctly. Most simply, I want others to know more about me.
In Bubba Tails From the Puppy Nursery At The Seeing Eye, it is King Campbell Super Seeing Eye Dog A.K.A Bubba’s turn to tell his tale.
While helping to ready a group of pups to go and meet their puppy raiser families, so they too, might one-day become Seeing Eye dogs, he tells of what it was like for him, to grow up and become a Seeing Eye dog.
My hobbies
My hobbies include reading, writing, music, and standup comedy. I also like nature walks, light hiking, tent camping, and fishing. No, I am not afraid to bait a hook.
Music I enjoy
My favorite types of music are classic rock, rhythm and blues, and classic country, as well as some present-day country music. I also like meditation music.
My favorite books and authors
I enjoy fantasy, science fiction, and books about the supernatural. I love the books by Stephen King, Dean Koontz, and many more. My favorite books include
Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, and J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings series.
My spiritual faith
I am a spiritual walker. I claim no particular faith, either Christian or pagan. I simply know that there is God and Goddess, or Mother Father God, as some call her/him. I lean toward the natural approach, or Druidism (Druidry), as it promotes harmony and respect for all beings, including the environment. I am also very interested in herbs and their healing properties.
