But ducklings hatch
with eyes open,
feathers at the ready.
One day in the nest,
and away they go
skimming wetland waters, plucking
tiny morsels from wetland plants.
Midges and damselflies
swarm prairie skies,
beetles, fairy shrimp, water fleas,
and snails suffice.
