BOOK OF THE MONTH…
This year at Tell-It-To-The-World Marketing we have a new feature. Each month I’ll be picking one Indie-Published book for the Book of the Month. What book is it that has me brimming with excitement this month? This month I have chosen author Phyllis Staton Campbell’s OUT OF THE NIGHT. When you’re through reading about this most excellently written book keep reading to learn all about the author and all her most magnificent books.
Out of the Night is a delightful read you won’t want to miss.
Author Phyllis Staton Campbell captures the feelings of a blind person perfectly. The annoyance that can creep in without meaning to at someone’s offer for help even when the offer is real and genuine, the relief when finding with delight that things are where they belong, and the reality that though our senses do play a huge part in how we get along in the world they are not supernatural as some would have you believe.
I love how, the author uses little phrases to let us know something more sinister is coming yet she doesn’t give too much away as I sometimes tend to do in my excitement of telling a story. The dialog she gives her characters is reality based, and the descriptions she gives each one brings them to life. If you love a book with lots of creep factor, a great mystery and suspense, with just a touch of romance tossed in to sweeten the deal this book is sure to please.
I read this book all in one day.
Although it is a quick read it is not rushed and there are no loose ends to leave the reader wondering after the book is through. Phyllis Staton Campbell is a marvelous author. Be sure to pick up this as well as all her books today.
I was given a copy of this book by the author for the purpose of reviewing. If you’d like me to review one of your books please contact me for more information.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Phyllis Staton Campbell, who was born blind, writes about the world she knows best. She calls on her experience as teacher of the blind, peer counselor and youth transition coordinator. She says that she lives the lives of her characters: lives of sorrow and joy; triumph and failure; hope and despair. That she and her characters sometimes see the world in a different way, adds depth to the story. She sees color in the warmth of the sun on her face, the smell of rain, the call of a cardinal, and God, in a rainbow of love and grace.
Although she was born in Amherst County, Virginia, she has lived most of her life in Staunton, Virginia, where she serves as organist at historic Faith Lutheran church, not far from the home she shared with her husband, Chuck, who waits beyond that door called death.

Another new Tell-It-To-The-World Marketing addition is
Author David Cousland.
David has some awesome reads that are sure to make your summer reading most excellent. Many of them are short-stories and easily read by the beach or pool.
Check him out below.
About the Author in his own words…
Born in the industrial Midlands in 1950, I was educated at Dudley Grammar School (to the best of their abilities) before going on to work in the banking industry, the latter years working on very exciting plastic card payment schemes. Married (twice) with two daughters and three grand-children, my hobbies outside of the family and writing include golf and travel, occasionally combining the two when searching for golf balls that have strayed way off-line. A number of my stories are based around places I’ve been fortunate to visit and love including them whenever I can.
I first started writing at the tender age of 62 and have now published 15 e-books and short stories. I particularly enjoy writing in the first person, which has been a bit of a challenge as the majority of my stronger characters are women. I write for pleasure and hope you enjoy reading my stories.
Currently I’m working on my first sci-fi story and also a horror story aimed at the young adult market. Never having previously attempted to write anything in the fantasy / sci-fi genres and very little in the horror sector– this is a case of fingers crossed and hope for the best, although I do have a number of ‘expert volunteers’ keen to read the horror story.

If you’ve got teenagers in your life, you’ll want very much to pick up a copy of the following book for both you and them.
“The Bright Side of Darkness” – Is an award-winning novel, Available in Kindle, audio, and paperback formats. It was voted favorite book of the month in March here at Tell-It-To-The-World Marketing.
About the author…
E. Pinto is a magnet for underdogs! Early in her married life, her home became a hangout for troubled neighborhood kids. This experience lit the flame for her first novel, The Bright Side of Darkness.
Pinto’s Spanish-American roots grow deep in the Rocky Mountains, dating back six generations. J. E. Pinto lives with her family in Colorado where she works as a writer and also proofreads textbooks and audio books. One of her favorite pastimes is taking a nature walk with her service dog.
The Bright Side of Darkness won a first place Indie Book Award for “First Novel over Eighty Thousand Words,” as well as First Place for “Inspirational Fiction.” The novel also won several awards from the Colorado Independent Publishers Association: First Place for “Inspirational Fiction,” Second Place for “Audio Book,” and First Place for “Literary and Contemporary Fiction.
Rick Myers, an orphan without much faith in the future, and Daisy Bettencourt, a blind girl who is running from an alcoholic father and a set of overprotective foster parents, cross paths at a high school baseball game and make their way together. Daisy becomes the bright spot in Rick’s universe as he and his four lifelong friends–Tim, Mark, and the twins–battle the forces of poverty and hopelessness. Mark’s grandma dies of heart failure, and Tim’s stepdad is arrested on felony child abuse charges, leaving them, like Rick and Daisy, with no authority figures in their lives.
Rick and Daisy are trailed by a fat man in a battered green jeep who makes Rick more and more uneasy as the weeks pass. Then, just when Rick discovers an interest in the culinary field and decides to complete his education, the bottom drops out of his world.
There’s nothing a damn bit bright about sunshine when you’re seventeen and you see it from the wrong side of a jail cell window. It isn’t that I’m moping for my lost freedom or anything. I wouldn’t give a half a crap for my life anymore now that the crew is scattered to the four winds, and all I have left of Daisy is her parting note in the waistband of my jeans and a wilted dandelion dangling between my fingers. But it seems to me that the Man Upstairs could have marked my downfall with a terrific thunderstorm or at least a few nasty black clouds out of the west.
When there’s a war or a funeral or some other sad thing going on in the movies, the sky usually turns dark and ugly, and the rain pours down in buckets. The longer I stare at the square of sunlight streaming through the tiny window of my cell and stealing across the floor, the lonelier I feel. August 27, 1986, is slipping by the same as every other hot, heavy day, and I’m the only one in the world who knows that nothing will ever be all right again. It hasn’t always been this way. I ought to have known better than to believe I could reach out and snag a piece of paradise, but for a little while I had it on my fingertips. Breaks are hard to come by for kids from the projects, though, and sure enough, all I ended up with at the last second was empty hands.
I’m doing my level best to hold off a flood of memories, but my mind keeps drifting back to the sweltering summer evening when the chain of events began that shattered my world into a zillion pieces. First thing tomorrow morning, some juvenile court judge will decide if my life is worth rebuilding. Maybe he’ll have better luck with my future than I did with my past.

There have been many stories written of the guide dog experience. As you know, both King Campbell and I have written versions of the tale. Here though is one that you’ll not soon forget.
Follow Your Dog: A Story of Love and Trust – Nonfiction by Ann Chiappetta / C 2017 In e-book ($3.99) and print ($11.95) from Amazon and multiple other online sellers.
Follow the author as she moves from an unhappy early life and her unstoppable loss of vision to happiness and fulfillment as a guide dog user, wife, and mother who works as a V.A. counselor. This touching, informative, and beautifully written book will surely resonate with many besides guide dog raisers, trainers, and handlers. Includes stories and photos of her most beloved dogs, past and present.
From the text:
While there is practical merit to the human–canine bond, which developed over a period of 70,000 years, it’s not akin to any other human-animal relationship. It is unique. The person and guide dog are interdependent, and the bond of mutual trust is what makes the partnership successful and fulfilling for both. With this book, I hope to take the reader on a journey of understanding: learning what it’s like to overcome the darker side of disability by walking the path of independence with a canine partner.

In the previous book listed you see the story of one woman’s experiences with having a guide dog. If you keep reading you will get to see my book on that subject as well. We will even show you a book written by the dog himself.
The following book addresses the issue in a different way like no other before.
Pathway to Freedom: A Guide Dog Owner’s Manual – A comprehensive e-book by Shelley McMullen / C 2010 / $24.99
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to own and work with a guide dog? Do you have a guide dog and are having some difficulty that you would like to discuss with an experienced graduate as opposed to a trainer? Do you know someone who is blind or visually impaired and you want to get information for them about guide dogs? Or are you a person who simply would like to educate yourself about guide dogs?
If you have answered yes to any of these questions, visit http://www.guidedogmanual.weebly.com for more information. There you will also find more information about Shelley and her life coaching services.
Shelley McMullen is also the author of Austin Bound, C 2016, about a difficult period in her life (1996-2000) and how her problems were resolved. In both e-book ($3.99) and print ($9.50). Full details and a free text preview are at: http://www.dldbooks.com/smcmullen/
Previously we saw a book about being a care-giver for one’s partner, and while I can only imagine how hard that is the next book up in our sizzling summer TBR list is one that is a truly hard subject to understand unless you have done it.
Just imagine the mix of emotions one must feel when they turn from child being cared for by parent to adult child caring for parent.
The Bumpy Road to Assisted Living: A Daughter’s Memoir – by Mary Hiland / C 2017 E-book: $3.99 / Paperback: $11.95 (209 pages) Available from Amazon, Smashwords, and multiple other online sellers.
As a blind only child, the author enjoyed the single-minded love and devotion of her parents. So, when her mother, in the early stages of Alzheimer’s, was going blind and deaf and needed to move into assisted living, it was time for Ms. Hiland to assume the duties and role reversals required for her mother. She wrote her book with the hope of being helpful to others in this tough place in life.
Just one of the many glowing review quotes that accompany the book: “Most of us have faced, or will face, the problems of dealing with an aging parent, but Mary Hiland did it blind. Her book The Bumpy Road to Assisted Living captures the frustration, rewards, and incredible complications of the ordeal with feeling and humor. I was impressed that Mary handled it so well—and thankful that she tells us about it so vividly!”—Daniel Boyd, author of ’Nada and Easy Death

About the book
Set primarily in Tennessee and Virginia from 1924 to 1976, this is the adventure-filled life story of Jim Taylor: lawman, lover, family man, churchgoer—and murderer.
After Jim’s beloved sister Annie is raped and murdered at the age of 13, he becomes obsessed with finding her killer and meting out “payback.” The story of that pursuit, Jim’s revenge, and the stunning surprise ending of the book make up the central story.
When we first meet Jim, he’s madly in love with young Lilly Mae Larkey, an ambitious beauty he’s known since childhood. Between them and their eventual happiness, there are many twists and turns, a long separation, and a serious rival for Jim.
Along his journey from besotted teenager to respected, experienced lawman in Dawson, Tennessee, Jim has a series of torrid relationships with other women and numerous encounters with lawbreakers, some of them extremely dangerous. One man leaves him with a nearly fatal head wound. The June 1943 race riots in Detroit are the impetus for reflections on the sad state of race relations in that era.
The author’s father was a lawman in Sullivan County, Tennessee. His life was the inspirational starting point for this work of fiction.
The cover image features Hensley family property in rural Tennessee. Cover design by David Dvorkin. The book was edited by David and Leonore Dvorkin of DLD Books.

Jalil Mortazavi was born in Iran in 1955. In 1976, he came to America, where a series of operations failed to restore his sight. With much help and kindness from others, plus plenty of hard work, he learned English, attained university degrees in communications and counseling psychology, and gained diverse work experience, including in the theatre and radio and as a court interpreter. Eventually, he also married and had a child; his young daughter, Diana, is pictured on the cover with him. Today he works as a freelance journalist based in Boston.
Mr. Mortazavi has written this book out of gratitude to all those who assisted him and showed him such kindness, as well as to the country that became his new home. In it, he attempts to identify and then define the various elements of American society that he sees as unique and of special value. He calls those, collectively, the mystery of America. With joy, humor, and unfailing positivity, he paints a picture of America that we can all hope is at least part of our reality, as well as an ideal.
His previously published book is From Iran to America: Changes, Choices, and Challenges (C 2013). Details are on the author’s website, linked to above.
If you like SF the following book is sure to please. Check out this wonderful work. You won’t be disappointed.
The MetSche Message – A coming-of-age science fiction novel by Stephen A. Theberge / C 2016 In e-book ($2.99) and print ($12.95) on Amazon and other online sites. Full details, a free text preview, and buying links: http://www.dldbooks.com/stephentheberge/ Cover design by David Dvorkin.
Andre, nearly blind, experiences years of alienation, frustration, and abiding sadness in the face of human beings’ cruelty to one another. His sources of joy are few: good food, music, computer science, and the arms of his lover, John. Only in middle age does he learn that he and a very few others have been chosen by two far superior alien races to deliver a message to all of humanity.
The story is told primarily in the form of a long account of Andre’s life: from his very earliest memories of being a visually impaired baby to the stunning visions of their planets imparted to him by the aliens, the Metans and Schegnans. Along with allowing him to view their beautiful present worlds, they show him the extremely violent past that they have evolved beyond.
Can human beings ever do the same?
Will Andre, John, and the two psychiatrists who are also privy to the aliens’ powerful message be able to convince others on Earth to listen and learn?
Readers are left to imagine their own answers to these questions. What they could never doubt are the emotion and deep humanity from which this imaginative and poignant story obviously springs.

If you or someone you love has ever experienced or is experiencing Breast Cancer you will want very much to read this book.
Another Chance at Life: A Breast Cancer Survivor’s Journey – C 2012 by Leonore H. Dvorkin (This is the third and most recent edition of the book.) In e-book ($3.99) and paperback ($9.95) from Amazon and other online sellers. Also on Audible.
Overview of the book:
In 1998, at the age of 52, I had breast cancer and a left-side mastectomy. That was my eighth major operation, but my first for the treatment of a life-threatening disease. Almost immediately after the operation, I became aware that there were unexpected benefits to be reaped from this experience, benefits which ended up changing my life and many of my attitudes.
Eventually I decided to write a book detailing those many benefits and my thoughts on a variety of topics related to health, health care, self-image, and the value of courage and optimism in the face of adversity.
Surviving breast cancer left me a happier, calmer, more focused, and more appreciative person. Now my principal message to other women is that breast cancer does not have to be an entirely negative, terror-inducing experience. On the contrary, it can leave them better off than they were before, both physically and emotionally. I know, because it happened to me. My book is primarily the story of that physical and emotional journey.
Review quotes (with more quotes, plus their attributions, on my website):
“A terrific read: well-written, frank, and honest.”
“Beautiful, moving, informative, uplifting.”
“An unusual and important perspective on the experience of having breast cancer.”
“An uplifting and powerful story with a very attractive message.”
“A reflective and ultimately optimistic memoir.”
“Leonore Dvorkin writes with refreshing simplicity and lack of woe. The book reads like a novel, so engaging is her style. … This book is the epitome of healing after trauma.”
Here is another SF book which deals with the problems of today in quite a unique way. If you’re a SF fan be sure to put this onto your summer TBR list.
THE DEMMIES – A novel by Ann K. Parsons / C 2017 / 445 pages in print. In e-book ($3.99) and print ($17.95) from Amazon and multiple other online sellers.
The Demmies is also on Bookshare. Full details, cover, author bio, and more: http://www.dldbooks.com/annparsons/
The demmies were the public’s darlings, but they led a double life. By day, they posed for pictures, were guests on TV shows, and helped to increase knowledge about genetic engineering by taking part in scientific experiments. By night, they faced Dr. Albert Lud’s unauthorized experiments and his torture.
Was there something better for the genetically engineered, foot-high humans? Could they escape? If they did, could they find food, shelter, and freedom from the ogre who tormented them? Could they trust any of the “big folk” to help them? These were some of the questions that kept Alex Kenyon awake at night.
His daughter Ruth wondered what made a human being. Was it size? Was it intelligence? Was it belief in God? What made her know she was a human being, even though only nine inches tall?
This is the story of how Alex’s and Ruth’s questions are answered.
A note from Leonore Dvorkin of DLD Books (www.dldbooks.com):
A marketing tip for any author is to take advantage of all possible personal connections: friends, family, work colleagues, church groups, book clubs and other clubs, alumni associations, etc. Ann Parsons took that advice and contacted her alma mater, Elmira College (in Elmira, New York) regarding her book. They responded with a wonderful notice about the book in their online alumni magazine. Go here to see it: https://www.elmira.edu/Student/Whats_happening/news/2017/12/Ann_Parsons.html
If this is not accessible to you, I can tell you what it includes. The headline is: “Alumna Authors Suspense Novel.” Following that is a large photo of the cover, a brief synopsis, a link to the novel on Amazon, and the link to the author’s website (provided above). An author could hardly ask for more. Thank you, Elmira College!
A Goodreads Review:

Oakland, California – the 1950s
From the protected environment of California School for the Blind, Pat Chandler enters an ordinary public high school, where he and his blind friend Carlos are a tiny minority. How will the teachers and other students treat them? Most of them have never met a blind person before.
For Pat and Carlos, challenges of this type are nothing new. Fortunately, Pat has Lucy Candelaria beside him. Her love and support, along with his own strength and determination, will give him the help he needs to succeed. In young Becky Simonson, Carlos finds a friend and loving companion as well. As time passes, they all develop new maturity and deserved self–confidence.
Naturally, as Pat grows into young adulthood, the issues he faces become more complex. The Paddy Stories: Book One featured the journey of the orphaned boy from Philadelphia to California, then his new life with Doreen and Bob Chandler, the loving aunt and uncle who adopt him. Book Two is filled with much hard work, a few confrontations, and many accomplishments for the young characters and their elders. Whatever the challenge, be it moving, remodeling, starting a business, or rescuing an abused classmate, they meet it with courage, creativity, and mutual support.
Throughout the book, music is central to the main characters’ lives. Pat, Lucy, and Carlos gain fulfillment and fame as the musical group “The Miracle.” The beautiful piano on the cover is the same model featured in Chapter 9. There could be no better symbol of the art that brings Pat and his friends so much joy—and will for the rest of their lives.
John Justice is also the author of the following three books:
It’s Still Christmas (fiction, C 2015)
The Paddy Stories: Book One (fiction, C 2016)
Love Letters in the Grand: The Adventures and Misadventures of a Big-City Piano Tuner (nonfiction, C 2017)
Full details are on his website. See the URL above.
John’s books were edited and formatted by David and Leonore Dvorkin, of DLD Books Editing and Self-Publishing Services: http://www.dldbooks.com/ They also designed the covers.

Summary and Comments by David Dvorkin
Suppose the Nazis didn’t lose World War II. No, they didn’t win WWII. They didn’t lose. At the height of Nazi power, Hitler died and was replaced by a ruling clique that quickly came to terms with the Allies. Decades later, officially no longer fascist, Germany dominates Europe and is advancing steadily eastward into the territory of a shrinking Soviet Union. Much of the rest of the world is dominated by an ever more fascist United States.
No, it’s not a contemporary novel. It’s alternate history. Really.
The Franklin Watts edition (the first one) has the best cover of any of my novels so far. I adore it. It’s striking, it’s esthetically pleasing, and it captures the essence of the novel perfectly. The artist, Honi Werner, has since become quite famous. I’ve never met her, but I hope I will someday. Some authors manage to buy the original paintings for their covers; I want to buy this one more than any other.
“Agreeably alarming thriller. … A ‘what if’ that works. Budspy is smart, fast, and mean without ever dipping into hokey or otherwise distracting futurisms.”
Engaging thriller. …Taken as a conscience-less romp, it succeeds just fine.”
“Boldly speculative. … Author Dvorkin has a vivid imagination, and he imbues his new world with a chilling teutonic authoritarianism. … An involving anti-utopian thriller.”
Norman Spinrad in Asimov’s
“When it comes to this theme, Budspy is superior to just about everything short of The Man in the High Castle itself. … Masterful.”
“Well told adventure. … There is a degree of subtlety and insight working in this novel that one encounters rarely.”

Multi-genre Author Phyllis Campbell says:
When I released my book in October, I knew from bitter experience, that high quality publicity is the key to success. Tell-It-To-The-World Marketing offered just such publicity, through extensive Multimedia exposure at a price, less than a daily cup of coffee.
What has this exposure meant in dollars and cents? This is always hard to know, since exposure on one BLOG can mean exposure on another, with far reaching publicity. All I know is that I’m selling books. My book was picked to be featured at Book Expo America, in the spring, and I feel that it was noticed due to Patty Fletcher’s efforts through her Tell-It-To-The-World Marketing. I can’t recommend Tell-It-To-The-World Marketing too highly to anyone seeking quality publicity at an affordable price.

And, from Jo E. Pinto, Author of The Bright Side of Darkness:
Patty Fletcher has promoted my book for several months. She is innovative, thorough, and easy to work with. I appreciate her straightforward communication style. She lets me know exactly what she needs from me as a client, and she isn’t afraid to tell me when I should push myself harder and when I should take it easy on myself. Her prices are very reasonable, and she does a great job of finding new and different publicity opportunities.
