Hi, and HAPPY WODEN’S DAY! ! ! Campbell and I hope you all have a Wonderful Woden’s Day, and that nothing Weird or Whacky comes your way unless you wish it to be so. This week, we have some great stuff for you. First, let’s have a word from one of our great sponsors of the week. You know? I couldn’t do it without these most awesome advertisers. Make sure to check out the ads in between each article…

* Unemployed and actively seeking work? Underemployed and searching for a job that makes better use of your skills? Entering the workforce for the first time?

Having a job promotes dignity, helps with a sense of purpose, and hopefully brings in some money to buy the things we want. For many blind people, finding a job can still be a long, frustrating journey that can drain the self-belief of even the most positive person. If you’re looking for a blindness-specific guide, written by a successful blind professional who has helped many others realize their dreams, Bonnie Mosen’s book, “It’s Off to Work We Go”, contains practical advice, examples and anecdotes, all from a blindness perspective, drawn from her years of experience as a successful vocational rehabilitation counselor. From improving your chances of landing an interview to the all-important question of when, if ever, to disclose your blindness, it’s all covered. It’s written in a chatty, easily readable style, with many real-world examples of strategies that work and strategies that don’t.

To purchase the book or for more information, visit mosen.org/work. Bonnie Mosen can be contacted at bonnie@mosen.org.

Thanks Bonnie! I appreciate your business. Yall make a point of checking her out, and if you do, tell her Campbell and Patty sent you.

Now, I know you all remember Mrs. Tasha Halpert, and her Heartwings series. No, I don’t have an offering from her today. What I do have, is an offering from her Husband, Steven Halpert, and I got to tell you… According to this tale, he had a rough time of it while Tasha was away… Ladies, it just goes to show, our men really do need us. Now, whether they’ll admit it, well… that’s a whole other story… Let’s see what Steven has to say…

Domestic Tranquility A Cup of Tea

It was wonderful having Tasha back home after her weekend meditation retreat with her daughter in upstate New York.  She was in the bedroom unpacking when she asked, “Did you happen to see the box of imported bitter lemon lozenges I bought before I left? I left them on my desk. They were a special birthday gift for a dear friend.”

I frowned. “I’ll have to replace them.”

“They’re expensive and somewhat hard to find. The apothecary in Cambridge doesn’t always stock them.”

“I’ll call the first thing Monday. I’m sorry but at least they went to a good cause.”

“I’m surprised. You don’t even like bitter lemon.”

I nodded and helped her fit her carryon bag into the closet. “I thought they’d do the trick but they only made matters  worse.”

She looked at me. “Made what worse?”

“The tea.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I had thought they would add flavor to the flat tasting pot of tea I made for myself. Whoever said that to boil water was easy didn’t know much about cooking.”

” I just hope I can get another tin.”

“Especially when it didn’t work. The entire pot changed from overly tepid to varnish-like bitter.”

” What did you expect?”

“The same effect as putting a slice of lemon in a cup of tea. It picks it up without messing up the taste.”

She sighed. “Why don’t you start from the beginning?”

“I finally managed to get the water to boil. It took a while but I was watching the pot and that no doubt made it take longer.” She turned and I followed her into the kitchen. “Once it finally boiled I added two level teaspoons of tea to the kettle just like you do.”

“I’ve never put the tea into the kettle. I always use a tea pot.”

“I know that but it looked so clean I didn’t want to muddy it up and have to wash it. I went straight to the source. But my plan didn’t work.” I took two cups from the cupboard. Surprisingly, the kettle was already boiling.

“I can’t imagine what it must have tasted like.”

“One could cultivate the taste and eliminate the need for a tea pot.  It did have a sort of tannic flavor.”

“That’s why I use a teapot with a tea basket inside.”

Was she trying to tell me something? “But campers always boil their tea in a big pot over a crackling fire.” She looked at me and shook her head.

“I was desperate. I had a kettle of tasteless tea. I added some oregano and red cayenne pepper.  But it remained totally undrinkable. I turned off the stove and paced around the apartment trying to figure out what to do. Then on your desk I saw the bright yellow tin of lozenges. They were all stuck together inside and before I even knew what I was doing I had emptied the entire tin into the kettle.”

“Oh,” she sighed.

“Then it tasted like bitter dishwater.  I hope they weren’t too expensive.”

“They were.” She sighed. “But I know you’ll call, make the order and pay for them.”

She opened the refrigerator door, looked in, and frowned. She took out the remaining rice pudding and spooned up two bowls. “Well at least this is still okay. You don’t seem to have eaten much. Weren’t you hungry?”

“Late at night I’d lie awake in bed and think of nothing but food. But then it would be too late to eat anything. Instead I’d think about what I’d have for breakfast. But nothing seemed as appealing as your sliced fruit or the way you fix my burrito.”

“You just wrap it in foil and put it in the toaster oven.”

I nodded. “That’s exactly what I did. But when you do it they taste like they come from a bistro on the beach in Acapulco. Mine tasted like it didn’t like the idea of being my breakfast one bit. It was limp and still cold in the middle. It had shrunk into the foil and looked like some sort of corpse.”

“Oh dear, that’s terrible. You couldn’t have left it in long enough.”

“I  have a horrible feeling you think I’m inept in the kitchen.”

She smiled but said nothing.

“I certainly did! I checked it after twenty-five minutes and the end was crisp and just right. Then I slid on a slice of cheese, reset the timer for five minutes. Just like you do.”

“I wonder what could have gone wrong?”

“It could be that the apartment is haunted by someone who feels that the kitchen is no place for a man. Or maybe the toaster oven is on its last legs and resented my intrusion. But that burrito had a definite attitude.”

“It sounds that way.” She put the bowls on the table. “Perhaps the temperature wasn’t set correctly. But never mind, it doesn’t matter now.”

We sat down together. ‘For the first time in many a day the rice pudding tastes like it’s supposed to.”

“Maybe I should go away more often,” she chuckled. “That way you might lose a few pounds.”

Was she suggesting I was putting on weight? “It is odd that what you cook tastes better when you’re here to eat it with me. There’s something magical between you and what you’re cooking.”

“That’s sweet of you to say.” She smiled  got up and kissed me. . “Magical,” she smiled. It’s certtainly good to be home.”

Bahahehaheha  (Giggle) Pittiful Guy!!! Thanks Steven! Glad you lived to tell the tale… We enjoyed it!

😊

Wild Strawberry Benefits and Uses

by GrannyMoon

Botanical Name of Wild Strawberry: Fragaria vesca.

Other Common Names: Wood strawberry, alpine strawberry, English strawberry, fresa (Spanish), villijarðarber (Icelandic), Walderdbeere (German), fraises des bois (French), smultron (Swedish), Skovjordbær (Danish), markjordbær (Norwegian), ahomansikka (Finnish).

Habitat: The plant grows wild in areas with cool, temperate climate in Europe, North Asia, Australia and North America.

Description: Wild strawberry is a perennial, 5-20 cm high plant with short rhizome and long runners (stolons) that grow on the soil surface and turn into roots to form new plants.

The plants has light-green trifoliate leaves with toothed margins that have silky hairs on the underside.

The small white flowers sit on thin stalks, followed by small, red and aromatic fruits. The plant is in bloom from April to May and the seeds ripen from June to July. The seed are mostly dispersed by birds.

The fruits of wild strawberries are actually accessories, or false fruits which are in part developed from the swollen top of the flower stalks. The tiny achenes embedded in the surface are the true fruits

Plant Parts Used: All parts of the plant have been used in herbal medicine.

The young leaves are collected during the flowering period and can be dried for later use. The roots are harvested in the fall and the fruits are plucked when they are ripe. The fruits are usually eaten fresh.

Wild Strawberry Uses in Herbal Medicine

Traditional Uses, Therapeutic Benefits and Claims of Wild Strawberry

Active Ingredients and Substances: The leaves and roots contain tannins (argimonin and pedunculagin), vitamin C, traces of oil, proanthocyanins, flavonoids (quercetin and rutin), phenolic acids (salicylic acid, coffee acid and chlorogenic acid), and others.

The fruits also contain salicylic acid, invert sugar (a mixture of glucose and fructose), vitamins A and B, and anthocyanin (fragarine).

Wild Strawberry Uses in the Past

Ever since ancient times, all parts of wild straw berry have been used as herbal medicine. The leaves and roots have been used in herbal teas to improve bile and liver function, to treat inflammation of the bowel, and the berries have be used as a diuretic and an herbal remedy for gout.

Carl Linnaeus (1707-1778), a Swedish botanist, physician, and zoologist, believed that the berries could dissolve tartar and that they were the best medicine for kidney gravel and stones and gout. Linnaeus stated that he cured himself of gout through the use of wild strawberries, which he took in large quantities every year.

Sebastian Kneipp (1821-1897), a German naturopath and priest, recommended wild strawberry tea as a remedy for summer colds, and the daily consumption of the fresh berries as a preventive measure for kidney gravel and kidney stones, as well as for ailments related to the liver.

Wild strawberry infused water was used traditionally for bad throat and bumps and sores in the mouth.

In the 17th century it was apparently common to treat slow healing wounds with strawberry juice mixed with salt.

In the past, the herb was regarded as an excellent remedy against chilblains, by washing the hands frequently with the crushed berries.

Modern Day Medicinal Uses

Using the berries as herbal medicine is not especially common today, but the berries are often used in conjunction with other medicinal herbs in so-called blood-purifying teas.

In addition, the berries have been used as an herbal remedy for gout, arthritis, throat inflammation and kidney disease. They are also thought to improve digestion and act as a general tonic.

The berries have also been used cosmetically in skin care creams to restore and strengthen the skin, reduce wrinkles, bleach freckles and relieve sunburns.

The juice of the fruits has been used as a natural treatment for chilblains, and fresh strawberries have been used to remove tartar and discoloration on the teeth.

Since the fruits are rich in iron and potassium, they can be a good addition to the diet of those suffering from anemia.

The young leaves can be eaten, either raw or cooked. The fresh or dried leaves can be used to make tea that taste delicious and is suitable for children.

The leaves of wild strawberries are mildly astringent (contracting), diuretic and are considered to have blood-purifying properties.

An herbal tea made from the leaves has been used internally to relief diarrhea, gastroenteritis, ailments of the urinary tract and hemorrhoids.

The tea has also been used as a gargle to relief bad throat, gum inflammation and mouth ulcers (canker sores), and externally to treat minor burns, cuts and scrapes.

The astringent effect of the wild strawberry leaves are due to the content of tannins.

Dosage and Administration

To make a tea: One teaspoon of the dried wild strawberry leaves (2-3 teaspoons of fresh leaves) added to 2-3 dl of boiling water and soak for 10-15 minutes before straining.

It has been speculated that garden strawberry (Fragaria ananassa) does not possess the medicinal properties of wild strawberries, but some herbalists say that these two-related species have the same health benefits and can be used interchangeably.

Possible Side Effects and Interactions of Wild Strawberry

No adverse drug reactions or side effects have been reported with the use of wild strawberry in moderated dosages.

Wild strawberries leaves may affect the uterus and therefore should be avoided by pregnant women. The herb can cause allergic reactions in some people.

Daily Horoscopes for: Wednesday, 26 April 2017

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

If you`re born within cusp period (16 to 26 of any month); you`re advised to read horoscopes of both signs covered by that period. You`re in the border; you may have influences from houses within those signs.

Outlines are longer versions; consists of every possible details of everyday and based on three parts of each sign: 1st, 2nd & 3rd Decan; that is, any of three divisions of 10° within a sign of the zodiac. Even if you know or don`t know your Decan; I recommend, please read all three Decan.

Aries
Personal theme: I am!!
Fire & cardinal sign: March 21 — April 19

Epigram: Follow any urge you have to seek alone time right now. Listen to your heart.

Outline: Now is the time to focus on earning some extra cash. The New Moon in Taurus is bringing a new money cycle during the next two weeks, so be on the lookout for opportunities to increase your income. You may also become aware of a limiting belief about money that hinders your ability to manifest prosperity. An attitude of positivity will help to turn that around.

This is a great time to set a financial goal. Getting out of debt, building up your savings or finding a more lucrative job will be a great use of the enriching energy surrounding you. You`ve always prized your independence. Having money in the bank will allow you to lead the life you`ve always wanted. Instead of being forced to take jobs out of necessity, you`ll be able to pick and choose your assignments. Make your money work for you, rather than the other way around.

Two friends may have reached a turning point in their relationship. Both might require your attention. This could test your ability to maintain friendship with both. At work, just how much experience you have with new technology and design could be a factor in determining whether or not you can be left in charge of the project.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Taurus
Personal theme: I have!!
Earth & fixed sign: April 20 — May 20

Epigram: Tame some chaos today. Make a suggestion… your quick thinking will save the day.

Outline: Happy New Moon in your sign! The next two weeks will herald the launch of a new cycle for Bulls, so getting clear about what you want is your mission now. What is most important on your wish list, Taurus? Although you may achieve it during this particular cycle, having the intention to do so will set vibrations in motion to help you succeed.

You have the chance to reinvent yourself in a significant way. Changing your appearance, revamping your wardrobe or adopting a different role are among the possibilities. You`ve always loved the comfort of familiar surroundings. Unless you break out of your routine from time to time, you will grow stale. Trying out a new image, losing a few excess pounds or changing career direction will cause your creative juices to flow freely. Don`t be surprised when a brilliant idea for an art project occurs just when you change course.

Financial matters are likely to dominate conversation. You could be at odds with someone who`s been careless and who didn`t check the full cost of a service before agreeing terms. You might also be privy to a money-war involving two friends, who rarely seem to fall out, but who now seem to be pulling against one another. Someone who tends to shun the limelight could come up with a proposal that completely captures your imagination.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Gemini
Personal theme: I think!!
Air sign: May 21 — June 20

Epigram: Like a karmic Santa Claus, you will be handing out many gifts of goodwill today.

Outline: Completion will be the theme of the New Moon in Taurus during the next two weeks. It`s time to wrap up old business, heal a troubled relationship and donate material items you no longer want or need. Letting go of negative emotions will be the most important step, which will prepare you for the fresh start from the New Moon in your sign next month.

Your social life is wearing on you. Instead of making the round of parties, find ways to be of service. Volunteering at a charitable organization will restore your spirits. Choose a cause that is close to your heart. Serving meals to the homeless, cleaning the cages at an animal shelter or distributing flowers at the hospital will lend a welcome change in perspective. Instead of obsessing over your image, you`ll become more thoughtful towards others. It will be a welcome change.

Partnership matters dominate. You could be at odds with someone who`s completely unsure about the direction of your relationship. Your multitasking abilities could also come under scrutiny. An Aries friend may be willing to help you sort out a crazy mess. A magazine article could alert you to what`s happening at some kind of frontier. Mentally it appears you`re in futuristic mode.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Cancer
Personal theme: I feel!!
Water & cardinal sign: June 21 — July 22

Epigram: Cherish your objectivity today — it will help you sort through many choices.

Outline: A door opening in your social life will be the gift of the New Moon in Taurus during the next two weeks. This is an ideal time to meet new people who can bring new ideas and activities into your life. Participating in a group that inspires your altruism or personal growth will energize you. You may be inspired to initiate a gathering of your current friends too.

Your social life is sizzling with excitement. It`s a great time to go to parties, meet with friends and attend professional conferences. You`ll meet lots of interesting people. One or two of them will even show a very special interest in you. It`s flattering to be admired. If you`re already in a relationship, be sensitive to your partner`s feelings. Flirting with strangers will make them feel slighted. Instead, link arms and remind them how proud you are of being together.

Try as hard as you might, it may not be possible to please everyone. Even the closest relationships could experience tension. It may be that you`re now working with exceptionally creative people whose only flaw seems to be their lack of good diary management. News that two friends are going through a difficult patch could disturb you. Comfort eating is a possibility.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Leo
Personal theme: I will!!
Fire & fixed sign: July 23 — August 22

Epigram: Each time you have a new experience, you are peeling away another layer of life.

Outline: The launch of a new professional cycle during the next two weeks will be the gift of the New Moon in Taurus. Now is the time to open up to new ideas, activities and professional contacts to help you realize your goals or create new ones. Being aware of what you`re passionate about will help you make choices in your career that are right for you.

Setting new career goals will pay off sooner than you think. An opportunity to take the helm of a prestigious organization will fall into your lap. Do your best to retain good customers and attract new ones. Offering the personal touch will make the difference between success and failure. Even something as simple as having a polite person answer the phone can generate more business. Everyone is so tired of automated replies and push button systems. The human touch will set you apart.

It is said that when the going gets tough, then the tough get going – which you`re likely to do now. It`s often forgotten that those of your sign can show extraordinary sensitivity too though. Having tuned in to someone`s acute distress, you could be in supercharged mode, trying to make their life better. At a different level entirely, you could be challenged by a colleague who finds your design and artistic tastes at odds with theirs.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Virgo
Personal theme: I analyze!!
Earth sign: August 23 — September 22

Epigram: Don`t push yourself to start new things — give yourself time to do simple tasks.

Outline: Exploring higher knowledge will be the theme of the New Moon in Taurus during the next two weeks. You`ll be inspired to accelerate your personal growth through learning, spiritual development or travel. This will be a time of gaining new and interesting experiences that broaden your perspective about life. Your faith and inner guidance will likely play an important role in the process.

You`re ready for an adventure. Book a trip to a destination that has fascinated you since childhood. You`ll have a marvellous time experiencing the sights, sounds and tastes of another culture. If you`re single, you will meet someone special on this holiday. Someone who finds you exotic will pursue you to the ends of the earth. It`s gratifying to be held in such esteem. Do you already have a partner? This journey will feel more like a second honeymoon than the average trip. Enjoy.

A professional arrangement may have reached a turning point. You may now needs to make a decision. Two good friends could provide essential support. Their special gifts complement one another. It seems one has the ability either to see into the future or to work with new technology. The other may have considerable design skill. You might need both to help you with a professional challenge.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Libra
Personal theme: I balance!!
Air & cardinal sign: September 23 — October 22

Epigram: Investigate your relationships today. Strike up a few random conversations.

Outline: The New Moon in Taurus will illuminate the deepest parts of your psyche during the next two weeks. This is an excellent time to go inward to uncover and heal any resentment, fear or powerlessness that hinders your emotional freedom. Your sex life will especially benefit from the cleansing effect of this influence if you`re willing to face the feelings you need to release.

Let down your defenses with a trustworthy friend. Talking about a problem that has been plaguing you for a long time will be liberating. At long last, you`re ready to make a big change. Whether this means breaking off a toxic relationship, getting treatment for an addiction or beginning a fitness regime is immaterial. The important thing is to acknowledge a personal challenge and take steps to correct it. Stop beating yourself up. You`re on the path to recovery. Embrace it.

You could pick up tensions in relationships. It may be that these are necessary stages before certain partnerships can move forward. Your own relationship with technology might need to be reviewed. It might also be necessary for you to arrange to have a photograph taken or to revamp your CV.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Scorpio & Ophiuchus
Personal theme: I desire!!
Water & fixed signs: October 23 — November 21

Epigram: Yesterday`s fight seems like a silly misunderstanding today. Extend an olive branch.

Outline: A partnership may soar to the top of you priority list during the next two weeks. The New Moon in Taurus is bringing a new cycle that can include a fresh start with your mate, partnering up with someone on a project or spending more time with your closest friends. If you`re seeking a relationship, you may meet someone compatible if the time is right.

Negotiations will go very well. You`ll be able to get everything you want and more. With this in mind, you should shoot for the stars. A conservative friend will urge you to scale back your demands. Don`t pay any attention; you have full control of this situation. The more forceful you are when forging this deal, the greater respect you will earn. You`re dealing with someone who must be shown who is boss. Being overly agreeable will cause them to take advantage of you.

Your nervous system could be put under some duress. A younger person might suggest an interesting and novel alternative therapy. Involvement with younger people or with those who are technically literate, could be challenging. You might not be sure that a system will work as smoothly as they believe. Experience might tell you that the time-scale is impractical.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Sagittarius
Personal theme: I see!!
Fire sign: November 22 — December 21

Epigram: Go beyond simple small talk today — touch on more substantial and real topics.

Outline: The New Moon in Taurus will bring a new cycle to your work, health and/or volunteer activities during the next two weeks. You may receive a job offer or attract opportunities to advance your current work. This can be an excellent time to launch a diet and fitness program. Your heightened awareness of those in need may prompt you to reach out to a non-profit organization.

A health program yields impressive results. You`re happy to move past a nagging problem that has been draining your energy. Now you`re eating well and exercising regularly, it`s easier to meet your goals. Your soaring productivity will lead to a job offer or promotion. Earning a steady income allows you to travel more frequently. Think about taking out a credit card that has a generous frequent flyer programme. You`re going to need it.

A close colleague or partner may now have reached a critical point in their professional development. They might now need you to feed them with ideas. A mopping up operation after weekend activities could put strain on this relationship however. It may be suggested that similar events are held in the future. This could be more than the other person can contemplate presently.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Capricorn
Personal theme: I use!!
Earth & cardinal sign: December 22 — January 19

Epigram: Today, be mindful that everything you do has a reaction. Don`t be too generous.

Outline: The New Moon in Taurus during the next two weeks is bringing a fresh cycle to your love life and creative endeavours         . You`ll be inspired to share what`s in your heart with your sweetie or seek out a new paramour. This is also an ideal time to develop your creativity through a class or project that sharpens your skills (or uncovers a new talent!).

You`re ready to cast work aside and have some fun. This is a wonderful time to go to a party. All eyes will be on you. If you are looking for love, be sure to wear a special outfit that makes you feel fabulous. When you exude happiness and self-confidence, you`ll attract someone who is worthy of your affection. Are you already in a relationship? Your amour will give you a beautiful gift. This marks a turning point in your life together.

You could experience minor irritation, manifesting perhaps physically as a rash or tummy upset. It`s possible that ideas are coming at you at lightning speed, and that you`re not been given enough time to process one train of thought before another is thrust on you. Diary management and travel arrangements could be yet another source of concern. On the positive side, what is agreed over the next couple of days could improve your financial situation.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Aquarius
Personal theme: I know!!
Air & fixed sign: January 20 — February 18

Epigram: The only thing you should be focusing on today is making new plans. Set some goals.

Outline: The New Moon in Taurus will bring a fresh start in your home life during the next two weeks. You may be motivated to initiate more activities and conversations with your family, consider buying a home or launch a re-modelling project. This is an excellent time to research your ancestry to gain insights into your family patterns and how they influence your behaviour.

Pay attention to your feelings. They are urging you to try something new in your home life. Relocating to a beautiful location, buying your own home or refurbishing your existing abode are among the possibilities. You may not realise it, but your surroundings have a profound impact on your psyche. Living in a place that makes you relaxed will improve your health. It will also strengthen your relationships. It`s easy to be loving and generous when you`re comfortable.

It would be fabulous if you could have a walk by the sea. If that`s impossible, then maybe looking at a picture of water would have the same effect. Greater awareness of ripples of undercurrents might help you understand what`s going on in several key relationships. Money matters are also likely to require particular attention. Again, the ebb and flow of income and expense could come under scrutiny.

———— ———– ———- ——— ——– ——- —— —– —- — — –

Pisces

Water sign: February 19 — March 20

Epigram: Tackle your to-do list early — spend the rest of today thinking about the future.

This will be a time of learning to gain knowledge, develop a skill or simply to satisfy your curiosity. You`ll be more aware of how you express yourself and inspired to share your ideas. Exploring locations that are new to you will also broaden your knowledge.

This is a great time to learn something new. Taking a course for fun will be a welcome change. You`re tired of going from home to work and back again. Being engaged in an intellectually stimulating activity will make you excited to get out of bed. You`ll be studying alongside highly interesting people. Being able to make friends from all walks of life will prompt you to make some changes. Get rid of any arrangements that are no longer working and be willing to pursue a different path.

In financial matters, you could be pulled in several directions. It`s likely to be at least another week before you really know where you stand. For now, you could be accused of inhabiting a dream world. In protecting your personal interests, it may be felt that you`re sacrificing a relationship. It`s possible too that someone younger (and about whom you care very much) is giving you cause for concern.

WOW! Lots going on with all the different signs this Woden’s Day. I don’t know about Yall, but I read the Scopes on my friends, and family. You know? To kinda have an idea of what might be going on with them. Sometimes it can help to avoid all kinds of conflict.

Yesterday Campbell and I were able to get out and about and enjoy a walk. As we were rambling along, we noted lots of dogs out enjoying the break in the rain as well. That got me thinking about dogs, and what kind of impact they have on our environment. Well, you know me, Information Hog… I had to look it up, and the following is what I found. Check this out, and see what you think. I thought what with us just having had Earth Day and all this was pretty neat.

Your Pet

We asked our Facebook fans, “Do you take any earth-friendly steps to help reduce your pet’s carbon pawprint?” Today, we’re sharing some of our favorite answers:

Thinkstock

  1. Prevent pet overpopulation
“Spay or neuter!” says Leslie H., and we agree. All pets have some environmental impact, but spaying and neutering keeps the pet population in check (and unwanted litters out of shelters).
  2. Buy in bulk
Maria R. buys the biggest bags of pet food available. “That saves on gas back and forth to the store,” she says. It also cuts down on packaging waste (and is easier on the wallet).
  3. Scoop poop
Unscooped dog poop can pollute water and spread disease (read our article 10 Reasons to Scoop Your Dog’s Poop). Facebook fan Mar Mar C. goes even further, composting her pet’s waste. (Pet poop should be kept separate from the compost you put on your vegetable garden. Check out Cityfarmer.org’s guide to making a dog waste composter.)
  4. Buy reusable supplies
Kathryn H. housetrains her dogs with machine-washable puppy pads. One reusable pad can keep hundreds of disposable pads out of landfills — and save you money in the long run.
  5. Recycle what you can’t reuse
Mary Kay G. makes sure to recycle dogfood cans — but many other types of food have recyclable packaging, so be sure to check. Kat H. buys organic dog food that comes in recyclable bags. “Also, it is locally made, so less pollution,” she points out.
  6. Use earth-friendly pooper scoopers
“I use biodegradable poop bags and, as a pet sitter, that’s a lot of bags,” says Kathy R. PETCO has a wide selection of biodegradable pooper scoopers. Reusing old paper bags works too.
  7. Make your own pet toys
“My birds play with junk mail and cardboard boxes,” says Janice R. Repurposing household items into toys can be fun for you and your pet, and cuts down on household waste. Need ideas? Check out the links at the end of this post.
  8. Use eco-friendlier cat litter
“I use a corn-based litter, which you can flush instead of having to use plastic bags to dispose of the waste,” says Susan P.  Worried your cat won’t like a new litter? Set up a “litter cafeteria” so he can choose his favorite.
  9. Harness cuddle power!
“We keep the heat really low, but warm up with dogs,” says Catie K. “[It’s] the true meaning of a ‘three-dog night.’” Seconds Micah E.: “In the winter, I can turn the thermostat down because my pets love to snuggle.”
  10. Adopt a homeless pet
This brings us back to our No. 1 point: Pets, like humans, inevitably impact the environment. But buying from a pet store or breeder just encourages more breeding, while adopting a homeless pet doesn’t add to the pet population. Pet adoption is the original green option!

Tell us: Do you do anything to make yourself or your pets more eco-friendly?

That was interesting. Didn’t you think? Now, speaking of interesting, I’ve got a book for you to check out. Check out this magnificent tale. Guess what? The Author just so happens to be one of my FB Friends…

The Orchid Keeper.

A short novel, by Jennifer Deese has been called inspirational fantasy. Born and raised in the Northeast United States. Miss Deese developed a deep love for books at a very young age. As she grew older, she knew her place in the world was in writing. After beating her own addictions years ago, she began to take steps to make that dream come true.

The Orchid Keeper takes us along on a fantastical, yet difficult journey, of an addict and alcoholic named Cora. In a fast downwards spiral and drowning in denial and projection Cora gets an amazing, and wondrous opportunity to change the path she is on. With the aid of Sol, an orchid keeper of Osipia, will she be able to defeat her demons?

Miss Deese is currently working on another book in The Osipian Chronicles, called The Fading Light. In this second book, we will once again see the effects of addiction; this time on a race of beings from another world. You can follow her progress on any of the sites listed below.

Jennifer has also had a horror short story published in an anthology, The December Awethology: Dark Volume. Her story, Jingle Jars, is featured on the cover. In this story, Karma takes its toll on a fellow for whom payback is way overdue. A demon is the hero of this story, and when you read it, you will surely understand why.

Deese is always open to interaction with her readers, so feel free to follow her or contact her, via the site’s below, with questions about her writing, her characters, and the world she has created.
